Listening, learning ‘n stuff

This past weekend involved some of this:

First strawberries of the season – yum.

And a little bit of this:

Much-needed “present” time with loved ones – this is us on our “date night in” after strawberry picking (which was a reward for a particularly tough mentally – and physically – training run…but we won’t go back to that run, onward, right??)

This weekend also involved a rest day – which brings me to my main point of today’s post – on listening and learning.

Last week’s little surprise sickness-from-nowhere was a great reminder to maintain balance – something you all know I try very hard to maintain.  So I’m listening to my body and learning to include more rest – something I believe I fully need  (and deserve – you’ll see why in a sec) right now to perform my best, to feel my best, to do my best.

And with that – here is my workout plan for the week:
Sunday – rest
Monday – 6.5 miler in the AM; barre n9ne method in the PM
Tuesday – barre n9ne lean & tone in the PM
Wednesday – 5 miler rundate with the sis in the AM
Thursday – 6 mile rundate with the sis (and Scott) and barre n9ne long & lean legs; barre n9ne fusion
Friday – rest
Saturday –  4-5 mile run…in Central Park!! (we’ll be in NYC all weekend! More on this later)

You’ll note two things:  two rest days and yes, one less day of running (sob!) which was a lot harder for me to “agree” to than the rest day! I’m in that mode where I’m sincerely LOVING every workout and just want more, more, more! And even though I know I can do more, I am going to listen. Instead of five days of running plus 4-5 days of barre n9ne classes, paring that back to *just* four days of running will make a big difference. Especially as I continue to up the miles in preparation for the YuKanRun half in August. I mean really – what’s one day less of running in the grand scheme of things? I might miss my little bunny friends in the morning on Tuesdays but that’s ok – I’m listening and learning, right?

So there you have it – listening, learning ‘n stuff.  I’ll be back later to fill ya’ll in on the NYC plans for next weekend and to chat more about this whole barre n9ne thing, less than 30 days to go – and more inches to be lost. 😉

    • If this morning’s run is any indication – then I totally expect to see running improvements by paring back my running to four days vs. five days. I ran 6.5 this morning and felt like I could’ve run farther, and felt great the whole time. It was an awesome feeling! Coming off a rest day on Sunday totally helped, me thinks 🙂

  1. Love fresh picked strawberries. Sorry you had the crummy run. But at least you got it done right? And that’s still a lot of running girl. I think 4 days is plenty. That’s all I ever did with my crazy-ass half plan LOL. Right now I’m only getting in 3 runs, but am enjoying spin (for now) in between. Can’t wait to hear about NYC!

    • This morning totally made up for Saturday’s craptastic run, I must say . Still riding a high 🙂

      I think you’re right – 4 days is perfect…like I said, it’s just hard for me to turn down a good run when I’m in such a good running groove now, as crazy as that sounds!! Though nothing is crazier than that training plan of yours, I must say. hehe.

  2. I am GLAD you are listening! To your body and well, to me, too, on the one less run. I think it’ll be good for both of us! The second rest day too! Gasp 😉 Yay for TWO RUN DATES!

  3. Glad we are all listening to our bodies here! I had a bad running week so I cut out a day this week. I’m hoping it helps me get my running mojo back. However, even with two rest days, your week looks killer. You rock girl!

  4. So smart! I’m listening and learning, too. Today is a much needed rest day even though I wanted to workout, I knew my body needed to recover. Sometimes resting makes us stronger than ever before. 🙂 I ate a ridiculous amount of berries over the weekend!

    • Good, I’m glad you listened too!! I am still eating a ton of berries this week – blueberries and strawberries top the list. oh – and watermelon is still a close second in the “ridiculous amounts consumed” category in fruits this summer. 😉

  5. Ooh ooh ooh, NYC!!

    You are very wise to listen, and take the extra rest. The time off running too. More training does not always = better training. You could end up running a better half for having ditched that run from the schedule. Plus, we say this time and time again, but fitness and health is about balance; it’s not about cramming as many hours in as possible and running yourself (and your relationships) ragged (haha, listen to me preach!)

    Anyway, great, positive start to the week. *like* 🙂

  6. You are very smart to listen to your body. I haven’t really been feeling it at the past few workouts and feel like I need to take a week off and do nothing.

    Sad that I won’t see you on your NYC trip but excited for our ‘barre’ date sometime in the near future!

  7. I’m glad you’re listening to your body. I trained for two marathons and never ran more than four days in a given week. With all of the barre workouts and some additional rest, you will stay strong and be so ready for that half. And I am jealous that you’re going to NYC! I hope to get back there soon.

    Resting is just as important to improvements! You can’t keep tearing your body down and expect it to get stronger, right?? 😉

    • Well – Monday was actually really awesome (even though brutal) and I’m REALLY excited to see how I feel on Thursday. HAHA. Driving to NYC ought to be rather painful on Friday after all of that. 😉
