Thank you, rest day. That is all.
Let’s just say Saturday’s long run turned into what I’m deeming my best 11 miles ever. And that’s *with* a rather rainy “blah” start to the 11.
We were up around 7:30 (correction: I was up then, Scott took a little nudging out of bed…ha) ready to hit the road by 8. Scott said “I have a really bad feeling we’re about to get poured on.” So of course, I braced myself for the worst. One look out the window told me it was definitely raining – not pouring, but not sprinkling either, a pretty steady, yucktastic rain.
But off we went. Me in my “I heart sweat” shirt (obvs) for extra motivation. A quick tweet to keep myself accountable (totally worked btw) and we were on our way.
At first, I outright considered turning our “long run” Saturday into a short run and flipping Sunday’s “recovery run” into our long run instead. It was pretty gross out. And I knew Scott wasn’t feeling it but was trying to be all supportive (which I totally appreciated, what a guy). However, we got into a groove pretty quickly and before we knew it were already about 4 miles into our route when the rain started to let up.
And that’s when “golden hour” hit. The rain was no longer an issue (or distraction) and my legs were running along rather happily. Scott settled into a groove at that point too. We hit our first turnaround point and I bargained with myself – we’re already about a third of the way in, we got this. I was feeling so good and so glad that we didn’t give up like I originally anticipated we might.
Around mile 7, I knew we were gonna finish all 11. Mile 7 is where we run right past our street and it is often painful to know how close, yet how far, we are from the end of our run. But Saturday? I wasn’t looking at our street longingly, I was ready to power on at that point. And power on, we did.
Before I knew it, we’d hit our last turnaround, and then our final loop before the home stretch. Scott grabbed my wrist to check the time and told me to ‘push it’ the final half mile. So I dutifully listened and pushed it up the hill and around the corner to the end.
11 miles done in 1:49:59 exactly.
If I keep that pace up on race day, I could conceivably PR this race. And after watching the race course video (which I LOVE btw), I am feeling so good about this race. Not only is it a gorgeous course, but it is FLAT as a pancake. (If you have a few mins, go check out the video on the homepage of the race, very cool).
Long story short? Rested legs = happy legs. Happy legs = an awesome 11 miles. An awesome 11 miles = a welcomed confidence boost with just three weeks until race day.
Fresh legs are the BEST!!!! Congrats on such a kick-butt run!!! That feeling is unbelievable – knowing that you’ve put the work in & can PR!!! I also plan for a hill at the very end of my long run route…if I look at it like a challenge then the end doesn’t seem so bad & it gives me the push I need to power through.
I bet you felt like you were walking on air for the rest of Saturday!
I almost didn’t want to admit that I was hoping to maybe PR again with this race, but after Saturday’s run, it just left me so happy and confident, I just couldn’t help but proclaim it here for all to see!
And you’re right, I was walking on air most of Saturday…after the “zombie” feeling passed (the one where your body finally catches up with the fact that you just ran 11 miles haha).
Yay, you (and Scott)! I don’t know why, buy rainy runs always seem to turn into some of the best runs…and how awesome is the PR potential?! It’s only TWO more miles…you can totally handle that!
I think it’s because when it’s rainy, we automatically assume the run will be craptastic so when it turns into an awesome run that we weren’t expecting, it’s WAY WAY more awesome of a feeling. 🙂
Hmm only two more miles…I think I can handle that!
Yes!! Love it when I have fantastic runs like that. They don’t have to start off perfect to end perfect. Sometimes you gotta push just a little bit to find that zone. Now i need this to happen for me on Saturday for my 13-miler (eek)
That’s a really good point – they don’t have to start awesome to end out being an awesome run. Hmm, I think my sister could use that advice (Jo, are you reading this??). 🙂
“I was ready to power on” – that is the single best feeling when you’re running or racing; you’ve hit a point where you were once tired, or intimidated, and you think “nope, I *want* to keep going!” 🙂
It’s such a rush when that feeling overtakes you – and it always comes out of left field (at least for me), that feeling of “wow, I feel so good right now.” I totally appreciate that feeling because it is a RARE thing to experience during a run.
I am really glad your run was as good as it was, sis! Sometimes the ones you think won’t be surprise you and are the best. Try not to focus *too* much on a PR, though and just enjoy the race for all that it is and just run (but I bet you will PR because that’s how you rolll….).
I’m actually really not overly focused on the PR aspect of this race, I am really REALLY just aiming for another “Feel proud” moments during this run. Where I’m running happy and strong. The number at the finish is just a nice after-effect in my book. 🙂 And thank you sis for your support, you are the best sis ever.
Couldn’t agree more. Rested legs makes a HUGE difference in the run. And great pace. I guess we were virtual running partners again. 🙂
Ha, you’re right – we totally did a virtual training rundate together this weekend without even realizing it! Love it!!
Awesome pace lady! Rested legs do make the world of a difference (not like I know, mine are always so weary from Core Fusion). I’m so excited for you – you are going to dominate!
Aw thank you friend! I feel like I’m always saying I’m not a fast runner or don’t really focus on pace, but this run on Saturday taught me that I can indeed hold my own in the pace category and it felt kind of neat to see that! I just want this race to go well, to run it proudly and to cross the finish with a smile. That’s always my goal, first and foremost. 🙂
ohhhh yea! rest day makes long runs blissful! so glad the rain stopped. I was praying for ya!
aw you’re the best!! those prayers worked – just a few miles in and the rain slowed way down!!
Fresh legs rock my world. Nice work!!!!! That’s a fantastic pace!!
Thank you my fiercely awesome running friend, coming from you that means so much!!!
Great job girlfriend! You are more than ready for your race! I’m so excited for it!
Yay!! Thank you!!! I’m SO excited for it!!
Great job! It’s crazy how twitter can keep us sooo accountable! I didn’t know that your hubby was going to be running the half marathon with you?! That is awesome…I am still working on my husband to do another 5K with me!
Seriously, twitter was created for accountability, I swear!
And yes, my husband has run every race with me, he’s my running partner and my biggest coach and fan all rolled into one. It’s the best thing to cross that finish line one after the other. 🙂 I hope your husband will do another race with you soon!!
Great job on the run! Isn’t it awesome how rested legs make all the difference?
I have no doubt that you can PR–i base this on your confidence mostly–my advice is no matter what, don’t go out too fast. I used to always make that mistake because I get wrapped up in all the excitement.
It amazing what a difference it makes -must remember that next time I try to complain about a rest day. 😉
Thank you for the vote of confidence, I hope you’re right…but even more important to me than a PR, it’s important to me that I run this race strong and proud. That’s goal numero uno!
It must be so nice to have someone to run with and extra nice that it’s your husband. You’re going to KILL this 1/2. I can’t wait to read the recap detailing your PR, no pressure or anything 🙂
YEAH for flat courses with plenty of cups of water 😉
It really is awesome to run side-by-side, especially since I KNOW he could run these races much faster without me dragging him down but he sticks by my side no matter what. A true testament to the kind of guy he is. Truly special. 🙂
Thank you for the vote of confidence – reallly hoping for more water on this route, plus the lack of hills, ought to be a nice reprieve!
congrats! i’ve got 14 on sunday…NOT looking forward to it. it’s my longest distance EVER and i’m freakin’ out because not only that, but i’ll be doing it alone.
Well – how’s this. Let’s have a virtual #rundate on Sunday. I’ll be out there running too (and a bunch of us actually tweet about it as well…are you on twitter?) and it’ll make the miles go by quicker knowing that we’re “in this together” even if just virtually. You can do this!!
this may sound crazy…but i have NO idea what a virtual rundate is! 😦 sorry i miss the offer last week…have 16 looming this sunday.
Jess that is a great long run pace! Congrats on such a great run!
Thank you friend!!
