Foodie Friday – an ode to oatmeal

Oh, oatmeal.

Oatmeal is by far, my favorite breakfast of all time.

The best combo I’ve come up with? Why I do believe I ought to share it with you.

EatDrinkBreatheSweat…Oatmeal
1/2 cup irish oatmeal
1 cup water
dash of salt
sprinkle of cinnamon

In a saute pan:
saute one apple, chopped
sprinkled with cinnamon

Combine the apples with the oatmeal and top with a tablespoon of peanut butter.
Promptly devour.

Seriously – I dream of this oatmeal concoction. (no really, I do)

Other variations have included sliced banana, chopped pear, and if I’m feeling really crazy – maybe a sprinkle of raisins on top, for texture.

And sometimes? I will run just a little bit faster, just because I know – the faster I finish my run, the faster I get to my oatmeal.

In other words: I run for oatmeal.

  1. I am the blog weirdo who doesn’t like oatmeal. I try it sometimes just to make sure, and I don’t. I made a batch of Coach’s Oats yesterday and couldn’t even finish it.

Although I like the instant kind.

    • SO interesting that you like the instant vs. regular oatmeal — do you use the flavored instant or plain instant? If flavored, maybe you just need to find a way to replicate those flavors in regular oatmeal sorta like I do with the apple/cinnamon flavors I use (I used to love the apple cinnamon instant oatmeal!)? I’m such a geek, I want EVERYONE to love oatmeal. My husband won’t eat it – he thinks it looks like baby food. For shame! 😉

  2. I am seriously giving my oatmeal the ‘eye’ as we speak, I can’t wait to eat it, it makes me so unbelievably happy, especially after a run, and a cold run like today’s! mmmmmmm oatmealllllll!

    • Right?? My husband refuses because of the texture, but I swear if he gave it a chance, he’d love it. It’s so versatile – you can flavor it with basically ANYTHING and it’ll taste pretty amazing.

  3. I am eating my oats as I read this!
Everynight I combine 1 part oat, 1 part vanilla soy milk and then I throw it in the fridge. I bring it to work and eat it cold. Everyone in my office thinks I am crazy, but I love the way it taste. YUMMO:-)

    • See? That’s the style of overnight oats that confuses me. I feel like there is SUCH debate on the topic — some people make their overnight oats cold and others warm it. I used to make mine with steel cut oats on the stove (with water) and the next day, I’d add a bit of milk and warm it in the microwave before tossing in almond or peanut butter and fruit. It tasted SO GOOD that way. I never tried it cold – it does look tasty tho, maybe I’ll try it in the summer that way??

  4. Love this post! I run for oatmeal, too. 🙂 Usually with frozen blueberries, cinnamon and ground flaxseed, but apple-pb sounds awesome, too. Glad to have connected with you!

    • Yay for running for oatmeal! 🙂 I’m glad you stopped by!! The blueberries (frozen, no less) in the oatmeal, sounds awesome!! I sometimes toss fresh strawberries or banana in, just depends on my mood. Lately the apple/cinnamon/pb combo has been ADDICTING. For real. Mmm.

  5. I love oatmeal too! I do a huge batch of slow cooked oats on Sunday and then keep them in the fridge. My husband likes to take it to work for breakfast, and it actually works perfect to store them in a sandwich bag and then add in craisins, a little maple syrup, or whatever you like!
