When your body doesn’t fail you

Last night’s run?

A prime example of my body not failing me, even though my mind had other ideas.
(well, that’s  not entirely true – gimme a minute and I’ll explain.)

Let me set the stage first. It’s been ridiculously warm around here lately – as in hitting 70+ the last two days. In March. In Boston. Unreal. These legs have been itching to run, run, RUN in this weather. Hence Monday night’s impromptu rundate with my sis and last night’s planned rundate with the hubs – to the tune of 6.5 miles, around one of our favorite running routes in our neighborhood.

We set out a little after 5pm. It was still in the 60s. Peepers were chirping. A nice warm breeze was blowing. I had my wunder unders on from Lululemon (my latest purchase and newest Lulu infatuation!) and a t-shirt and was ready to rock our run.


My body was tired. I knew it as soon as we got into the first mile. But I told myself to chug on. I knew I had it in me to get through all 6.5, or at least that’s what I told myself at such an early juncture in our run.


We hit mile 2 and I was still feeling really beat up. Tired. But elated that the weather was so gorgeous and that I was running with my favorite running companion ever. So I kept it up.


The miles kept coming and my body was getting more and more tired. And now I’m getting mad at myself. Like what the heck is wrong with me – this is PRIME running weather, I should be rockin’ a mean runner’s high right now.

And then it hit me. Well – two things, really. First – I realized how fast our legs were moving. No wonder…we’re running like maniacs out here right now (no idea on exact pace since we run garmin-less, but my body tells me it was holy-sh*t-fast). And second – my rest day is near. As in – it’s today. Thank God for that. Clearly that’s why I was struggling so much last night. I realize this now, but didn’t fully understand it in that moment last night.

Anyway, we finished out our run, I got past the “struggle” feeling and started to feel better as we neared closer to home. We hoofed it up the last hill, around the corner and to the end of our route. I have never been so happy to see the stop sign at the bottom of the hill. I’ll tell ya that.

Well – things sorta deteriorated from there. After dinner, I got super duper nauseous. Ick. Took a shower. Sorta felt better. Ended up on the couch the rest of the night. A sign that I pushed it really hard *and* probably a sign that my body was just a wee bit tired, eh? Thank GOD today is my rest day — I am fully and utterly embracing it. Why yes, yes I am. 🙂

So – while I ended up feeling less-than-stellar at the end of the night last night, I still contend that my body did not let me down in the moment I needed it most: during the final few miles of that run, when my mind kept telling me to stop (or “please don’t puke”),  my body kept going. Gives me confidence that this mind over matter thing is for real *and* that if you trust your body, 9 times out of 10, it won’t let you down. <—can I get an “amen?!”

    • Haha, I love the deep thoughts!! You are totally right – our bodies are amazing little machines aren’t they? The better we treat them, the better they serve us. Hence today’s glorious rest day. I’ve loved every last second of it. 🙂

  1. I had that please don’t puke moment too while running last night. The weather was amazing, but I just can not seem to find my stride. I’m working on it. I’m glad you enjoyed the weather. I think it’s kind of amazing how our minds can actually overcome our physical struggles. I think you and I completely proved that last night.

    • I have weeks where my running never seems to get into that “stride” you’re talking about — it’s so frustrating BUT on the other hand, once you do find that groove again, it’s the best high ever isn’t it?

      It is amazing how our minds operate, and how our bodies follow when told to do so. Awesome stuff!

  2. Our bodies do what we will them to, don’t they? I am glad you are embracing your rest day today, you definitely need it! Maybe a day late perhaps and your body was revolting a bit last night hehe. Though lately, when I have run outside a longer distance or a faster pace than normal, I’ve gotten nauseous too, so weird.

    • I think that’s a concept lost on so many – that our bodies are our haven, and if we treat that haven well, it’ll support us and even surprise us with what it’s able to do and push through. That’s how I felt about last night’s run. Also a great, great reminder of how good a rest day feels after all that work — my body will feel brand new by tomorrow!! I can’t wait 🙂

  3. Running is definitely a mind over matter thing most of the time for me. Although, I can also tell when a rest day is near. Or when I shouldn’t be running three days in a row. I’ll make myself do it, but I can tell that my body doesn’t like me for it. Or maybe that’s just my mind!

    • It totally IS such a mental “sport” isn’t it? It’s crazy what the mind can do FOR you during a run or AGAINST you for a run depending on the day. In last night’s case, I’m glad it helped me to push through the miles vs. planting seeds of doubt. I hate when that happens on a run.

  4. I definitely realized that once you’re in shape, running is mostly mental. Seriously still trying to figure out how the hell I pulled out a half marathon 2 wks ago. And it definitely makes a huge difference when you’re body is tired. So no matter how happy you are about the weather, sometimes your body knows best. Sometimes. So it can be a weird fine line.

    • I’m seriously trying to figure that one out too 😉 It’s becaues the mind is a muscle too, I’m convinced. And yours is stronger than EVER> haha. 😉

      (and yes, your body DOES know best…it’s that pesky mind that doesn’t always listen, that’s when things become problematic…)

  5. Uh you never told me that it was hotter than usual! If you push yourself in that kind of weather, you’re body will do funny things to you.

    That being said that, I love reading posts of people who push themselves! I love it!!!!

    • Oh – did I leave that minor detail out? Yup, it was a lot warmer than it’s been, and definitely very much a contrast with my last outdoor run on Saturday (um hi snow and ice??). So yes, the weather plus the exertion definitely lead to the nausea. Not pretty.

      BUT agree – pushing it can be such a rewarding experience in the end, even if there was nausea involved 😉
